Tekmar Group Completes October Wellbeing Walk, Raising Vital Funds and Awareness for Niemann-Pick Disease

01/11/24

Tekmar Group is proud to announce the successful completion of its October 2024 Wellbeing Walk, an initiative that combined employee wellness with a charitable cause, raising much-needed awareness and funds for Niemann-Pick Disease. This event saw members of Tekmar’s team embarking on a 7.7-mile trek from Great Ayton to the iconic Roseberry Topping in Middlesbrough, with participants climbing the challenging elevation in support of a meaningful cause.

The walk aimed to support research and awareness for Niemann-Pick Disease, particularly Niemann-Pick Type C (NPC), a rare and progressive genetic disorder that affects cholesterol and lipid transportation in the body. NPC’s effects are especially damaging to the liver, spleen, and brain, leading to significant neurological decline. The disorder impacts individuals of all ages, with symptoms such as liver dysfunction, motor difficulties, speech issues, and cognitive impairments resembling dementia, highlighting the critical need for awareness and research into effective treatments.

The motivation behind Tekmar’s support for this cause stems from a deeply personal connection within the Tekmar family. Employee Dawn Gaskins’ brother, Jonathan, has bravely battled Niemann-Pick Type C since his teenage years and is now 40. For Dawn and her family, raising awareness for NPC has become a heartfelt mission to encourage both research and public understanding of this rare but devastating condition.

“Seeing our team come together not only for their own health and wellbeing but also to support a cause close to our hearts is inspiring,” said Chloe Ainsworth, Head of at Tekmar Group. “The funds raised through this walk will support critical research into Niemann-Pick Type C, and we hope our efforts contribute to better understanding and management of this disease in the future.”

Participants in the Wellbeing Walk were buoyed by the scenic views and the sense of camaraderie shared throughout the hike, making the event both physically rewarding and impactful in raising NPC awareness. Tekmar Group is committed to fostering a positive work environment that prioritizes employee wellbeing, and this walk exemplifies how wellness initiatives can have a broader, lasting impact.
